PROMICE 2019: Weather station maintenance in Northeast Greenland
With this fieldwork, I visited some of the most remote places in Greenland: the Kronprins Christian Land, Centrum Sø and the two lonely weather stations of KPC_L and KPC_U.
KPC_U was slowly getting frozen into the ice sheet: every summer, more ice refeezes on top of previous years’ ice. This is an accumulation process called superimposed ice formation. And since we visited in the middle of the melting season, the surface snow was saturated with water, almost drowning the logger box.
After our visit the new KPC_U station looked in better shape.
We even got the chance to fly over the calving front of Zachariae glacier which, together with its northern nabour 79N glacier, drain about 12% of the Greenland ice.
